Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment

Walden offers alcohol and drug treatment to fit the individualized needs of both adolescents and adults. Walden counselors typically suggest the least restrictive level of care that meets the individual’s need for treatment. We offer walk-in assessments at each of our locations as outlined below.

Walden has an 'in house', full continuum of care, differentiating us from many other substance use disorder providers. We can plan and adjust care plans to meet our client's every changing need and supply services within Walden, without the need for outside referrals.  We call this 'the Walden difference'.

Family education and engagement is available and encouraged. Please see our FAQs page for information about recovery support for families such as Al-Anon and Family and Friends SMART Recovery meetings locally.

Residential Services

For some substance use disorder clients, Walden offers a more supportive environment and provides residential services.

  • Anchor Residential Treatment provides medically-monitored detoxification, medical stabilization, counseling and continuing care planning services. Services delivered, including length of stay, in this purpose-built intermediate care facility are based on individual need.  A typical day at Anchor for our clients is busy - see an example daily schedule here (subject to change)
  • Walden also offers extended/long-term residential care; residential services within our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in a program called North Star @ Compass.
  • North Star @ Compass and Dockside both offer long-term residential treatment options for adults. The Dockside Program provides a transitional house for those seeking an environment supportive of stabilizing recovery. Individuals residing at Dockside participate in treatment and care management services.

Out Patient Services

Walden also offers Intensive Out Patient (IOP) services for substance use disorder clients at our other locations.   IOP is a 9 hour program offered during both the daytime and evening.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Walden recognizes the benefits of MAT and is pleased to offer these services through our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Our nurse is nationally certified to prescribe psychotropic medication for individuals ages 16 and up, and has recently become certified to prescribe buprenorphine (Suboxone) for opioid use disorder.  Medications such as buprenorphine and methadone consistently prove effective in treating opioid use disorder.  In recent years, extended-release naltrexone has also been approved for the treatment of opioid dependence and shown evidence of effectiveness.

Walden communicates with clients about the benefits of MAT, different MAT options, and developing an individualized plan for starting Vivitrol (oral naltrexone) while they are in residential treatment.  We find starting anti-craving medications while in treatment increases the chances of clients remaining sober in early recovery.
