Mental Health, Psychiatric and Crisis Services

Mental health therapy, psychiatric and trauma counseling services are central components to all of our programming. We operate a Community Mental Health Clinic at our Charlotte Hall and Lexington Park facilities and a group mental health practice at our Waldorf site. Mental health therapy is also now available via Walden at our Prince Frederick satellite site, and we hope to soon offer psychiatric care options there. Our psychiatrist and medical director, Dr. Paden, is based in our Charlotte Hall facility. We also offer a growing array of psychiatric care options at our Lexington Park facility to further expand access, to include a psychiatric nurse practitioner offering medication management and telepsychiatry doctors offering psychiatric appointments. Mental health therapeutic services provided by licensed mental health professionals are available primarily to individuals on a private pay (self pay or out-of-network insurance), medical assistance (MA) or PAC basis. Options for accepted coverage are always expanding.

You may walk in for a mental health assessment Monday-Friday between 9 and 11 a.m. at our Lexington Park location and on Friday between 9 and 11 a.m. at our Charlotte Hall location (except holidays.)

Thanks to a grant from Maryland’s Community Health Resources Commission and DHMH received by our partner Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital, we are also working on expanding mental health and psychiatric care options in the newly designated Healthcare Enterprise Zone of Lexington Park/Great Mills.

Join us at a training of Mental Health First Aid at Camp Maria Retreat Center on February 28th and March 1st in Leonardtown! Registration is required by contacting 301-997-1300 x 804.

Integrated care services, part of the Healthcare Enterprise Zone project, combine Walden’s behavioral health expertise with the expertise of our partners in primary care to co-locate services and care for individuals with chronic health problems or for those who might be experiencing warning signs of emerging behavioral health issues. The project places Walden behavioral health interventionist staff in primary care settings as well as creates access to mental health therapy, psychiatric and treatment levels of care for patients enrolled in the project who are in need of these services. Its purpose is to improve the quality of healthcare for participants as well as reduce the need for ER visits, hospitalizations and inpatient stays.

Current sites with our partner Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital include the Get Connected to Health mobile unit at Beacon of Hope Recovery Community Center on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by appointment. Please click here to open the project flyer for this location.

The Charles County United Way’s Charles County Women-United in Giving has also generously provided Walden with grant funding to serve a limited number of uninsured or underinsured Charles County women in need of mental health or psychiatric care.

For more information on accessing mental health or psychiatric care at Walden, you may contact us at 301-997-1300 x 885. We do offer walk in mental health assessments Monday-Friday 9-11 a.m. at our mental health clinic locations in Lexington Park and Charlotte Hall (except holidays) and by appointment.

For many victims of overwhelming events, counseling can be an essential component of trauma recovery. In counseling, victims are able to express themselves in a safe environment, learn about the cycle of abuse, explore elements of healthy relationships, and develop coping skills for trauma recovery. Individual and group counseling activities for victims of trauma (including victims of crime, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, rape and stalking) are based on best practices in trauma recovery. Thanks to grant funding from public and private sources, qualified victims of trauma and those who meet the criteria for VOCA (Victim of Crime Act) services receive free, non time-limited counseling services at Walden. We are also certified by the Governor’s Family Violence Council as a certified abuser intervention program, a service available to individuals directed by the court for intervention toward behavioral change and accountability for action. Our hotline is available by dialing 301-863-6661.
